Stress
We all experience stress every single day, but it's how we react or deal with stress that determines the effect it has upon us. Mostly stress is a good thing, and "Good Stress" is what gets us going, gets us through the day, and can give us a sense of achievment and purpose. However it's the "BAD Stress" which causes all sorts of problems, some apparent and some hidden.
There are standard times of stress that we all know about, taking an exam, starting a new job, moving home. These are accepted as time where we "put up with" the stress because we know it will come to an end, or the benefits of the end result outweigh the hassles we are going to experience.
However there are other stresses which are not acceptable, but we still try to handle them and say nothing. Being in an unhappy relationship, problems at work, money problems are just a few. Feelings of depression, fears and phobias, inadequacies are also common causes of stress that we bring upon ourselves because it's how we perceive them that causes the stress in the first place. These typically are not understood by someone on the outside, and helpful comments like "pull yourself together" can make the situation worse.
Once stress has taken a foothold in your life, it is difficult to take your focus away from it. it does no good to be told to "be positive" because all you can think about is avoiding the situation that makes you feel bad. As human beings this is entirely normal to do as we tend to
"Run away from Pain and Run towards Pleasure"
It is also important to realise that,
* Stress is avoidable. * Stress is temporary. * How we "see" stress determines how it affects us. * How we deal with stress is dependant upon our upbringing. * There is always a solution.
The normal problem that makes stress stay longer than necessary is that to overcome the stressful situation, some action is required. Sometimes this action is seen as being "too hard" or "too difficult" to achieve. In a simple example of being taken for granted at work and being overloaded, a simple "No!" can be sufficient to stop the stress from getting worse. However if saying "No!" is difficult for you (one of the biggest problems I see), or your desire to please or be liked by your bosses is important, this becomes a barrier in removing the stress.
Everyone is different and unique, and one persons stress is anothers excitement or challenge.
Short term stresses like house moves, marriage, job changes are generally taken in peoples stride as they know the situation will end and the result is worth the "hassle". In general no physical damage is done and everything returns to normal.
Long term stress really needs to be addressed as it chips away at the persons self esteem, confidence and more importantly, Health. If you find that when you do have a break you find yourself getting ill - stress is a problem!
How we perceive stress is key to controlling it. Using the "Dream Technique" can change this view dramatically and find relief where there was anxiety before. Also Analytical Hypnotherapy can change this view if the root cause of the stress is traceable back to childhood. Either way, there is no need to suffer Bad Stress anymore.
