The Dream Technique
Do you.....
- See the glass half empty?
- Forsee a problem with anything you do?
- Agree with people that you can't do something?
- Believe that everything is difficult?
- Feel as if there's no way out?
- Feel trapped in a situation?
- Believe there is nothing you can do?
- Stay ill longer than you should?
- Find everything a real effort?
- Say "Yes" and then secretly wish you'd said "No"
- Find it difficult to see the positive in most situations?
If the answer to ANY of these is YES! there is a way forward...
When you were younger and may have taken a test or an exam, people naturally tend to ask you "How did you get on?" Nearly everyone will answer "it was ok but," or "I wish I'd done more" or "I've really messed it up". We all seem to have an inbuilt desire not to tempt fate, and when we hear someone saying "Oh it was a doddle" "I got every question" "It was easy", we nearly always think they're covering up for an impending failure?
There's more to this, and deep down we find it difficult sometimes to see that things can be ok, we could have, or will do well, but we never like to admit it. Maybe its the British "Stiff Upper Lip"!
However as we go on in life, if these negative beliefs are taken onboard further than just the exam example they can cause all sorts of problems which simply put - hold us back from our true potential.
If you're taking the car in for an MOT, do you expect it to pass or fail? If from past experience it fails more often than not it seems logical that this is what we can expect. However, isn't it GREAT when we get a pass certificate and there's nothing else to pay?
Some might say it's easier to expect the worst so you're never disappointed, and on some occassions this may be true, but do we have to live our lives with that belief in the back of our mind all the time?
It may seem a simple or even silly concept, but the "Negative" approach to life has very real consequences upon our day to day living.
The Self Fulfilling Prophecy
- Have you ever been asked to do something and put it off because you thought or believed it was going to be difficult or even terrible? This is made even worse if the "thing" is a while in the future (like the dentist!). By the time you have to do it, you've got yourself so worked up, thinking the worst is going to happen. Consequently it generally is what you expected it to be. Why?
- Think of a time when you've been invited out to a party or event in the future that you're looking forward to. You imagine all the good thinks that could happen and it turns out that the event was a bit of a disappointment. Isn't it better when the invite is a spur of the moment thought, and the event is "tonight". Invariably you'll have a great time. Why?
I'm sure you have your own answers for these questions, but for me it boils down to your expectations. If you expect it to be "bad" - it may be. If you expect it to be really "good" it may not be. If you have no expectations at all, you can be pleasantly surprised.
Also your own attitude is tuned to this positive or negative outlook, and this outlook steers you towards what you expect.
Effectively you have your own internal set of scales. One the one side the negative. This takes all the negative things that happen during your day and determines how down you can feel. On the otherside is the postive, and this contains all the positive things that happen. So if you've more negative than positive, hey ho, your down, feeling low, and more importantly start to EXPECT things to go wrong. However, if its more positive than negative, you're having a GOOD day and everything seems fine and you EXPECT things to go right.
It is relatively straight forward to TRAIN you to be positive in outlook (not a happy clappy, everythings perfect, person living in cloud cuckoo land!). If you're feeling positive you can cope better, work better, relax easier, and feel better. Even if you believe you can't be positive, with the Dream Technique this will change.
The Dream Technique is based upon
"Expect Everything the way YOU want it to be, NOT the way you expect it to be"
- It is a skill that is taught and is not a therapy as such.
- It requires effort in the early stages, but quickly becomes a subconscious action, and therefore part of your normal routine.
- It is about changing your limiting beliefs into helpful beliefs that allow you to grow more than you can ever imagine.
- It is about releasing your full potential and removing barriers and obstacles from your progress.
- It is about being FREE
